Rick: Will you fix your marriage or get a divorce already?
Jerry: Well, we tried a couples’ therapist.
Rick: That’s Earth therapy. You might as well ask a horse to fix a merry-go-round. I mean, he’ll try his best, but mostly, he’s just gonna get horrified.
Somewhere in 2014 I discovered the show “Rick and Morty” and watching season 1 was amazing, a hilarious ride with fun, joy and adventure. So many references to all kind of movies, books and stories from different genres.
”Listen, Morty, I hate to break it to you but what people call “love” is just a chemical reaction that compels animals to breed.”
This year season 2 was launched and anybody who believed that season 1 couldn’t be topped was proven wrong. We had a lot more of time wifey stuff, parallel universes, strange horror, mad fantasy elements and artificial intelligence mixed up with a bunch of sic fi storylines and characters. Comparable with nothing that was shown in TV before. Here we got presented the most adult animation show for some.
“What about the reality where Hitler cured cancer, Morty? The answer is: Don’t think about it.”
My favourite episode was the one where Rick meets an old friend, a powerful artificial intelligence that decided to take over the population of a whole planet. Take all the minds of each individual and take it away. Funnily this lack of free will leads to a modern and peaceful society. Somehow this one of those stories that were ones most related to the classic stories of Sci Fi. This was one of those episodes worthy to be broadcast within “The Twilight Zone”. Amazingly enough – even that it was filled with Sex, Drugs and Rock’n’Roll. elements that are part of each and every episode of this show.
“Wow I really crononberg’d up the whole place huh Morty, just a bunch a cronenbergs walkin around.”
Even new words were born in this show, like “crononberg’d”, which as some of you already found out is a reference to the great David Cronenberg. If you want to understand the reference, watch the show and some of his movies. Both are worth your while.
So, this season was astonishing but what really got me was the end, the last episode where Rick kinda decides to give himself in and go to prison. And when one of the other inmates asks …
Prisoner: “Hey, what are you in for?”
After watching two seasons and only getting a glimpse of what Rick may have done so far in his life it feels like an understatement if there ever was one. To hear the song “Hurt” from Nine Inch Nails in the Background while all this is happening gives the scenery and additional creepy touch.
Warning: This is no entertainment, watching this may make your head pop.
